GRE Quant topics

GRE math splits into four topic areas. Each of the question-type drills above pulls from these, so if a topic is your weak spot, drill the matching task and read the worked solution on every miss.

Arithmetic

Fractions, ratios, percents, exponents, roots, and number properties. The bedrock most GRE math traps are built on, so drill it until the moves are automatic.

Algebra

Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, simplifying expressions, and translating word problems into maths you can actually solve under time.

Geometry

Lines and angles, triangles, circles, polygons, coordinate geometry, and 3D figures. Figures are not always drawn to scale, so reason from the stated values.

Data interpretation

Reading tables, bar and line graphs, and distributions, then computing percent change, ratios, and averages without misreading a truncated axis.

GRE math formulas

The GRE gives you no formula sheet, so a short core list of math formulas is worth knowing cold. These are the ones that come up most across arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

Arithmetic and percents

Percent change is (new minus old) over old. A ratio a:b splits a total into a over (a plus b). Average is the sum over the count, and the average times the count returns the sum.

Algebra

The quadratic formula solves ax squared plus bx plus c equals 0. Difference of squares factors as (a plus b)(a minus b). Slope is rise over run, and a line is y equals mx plus b.

Geometry

Area of a triangle is one half base times height. A circle has area pi r squared and circumference 2 pi r. The Pythagorean theorem gives a squared plus b squared equals c squared for a right triangle.

Exponents and roots

Same base multiplied adds exponents, divided subtracts them, and a power of a power multiplies them. A negative exponent is a reciprocal, and the square root of a product splits across the factors.
