Scaled scores are an estimate, accurate to about ±2 points, using the same engine as our mock tests. The Verbal and Quant percentiles are the exact official ETS figures for each scaled score. The total percentile is a normal-model estimate.

How it works

Why raw correct does not map cleanly to a scaled score

The GRE is section-adaptive, not flat. The same number of correct answers can land a few scaled points apart depending on which difficulty pool you were routed into.

Both Verbal and Quant give everyone a medium **Section 1**. How many questions you get right there routes **Section 2** into an easier, medium, or harder pool — and that pool sets a ceiling on the scaled score you can reach. This is why two people with the same raw total can score differently, and why a perfect run inside the easy pool still cannot reach 170. GRE raw-to-scaled conversion chart: how Section 1 sets your ceiling

This raw-score conversion chart shows how your Section 1 raw-correct count decides which Section 2 pool you see. Verbal cutoffs are lower than Quant because each Verbal question is harder.

Verbal: 0–4 easy, 5–8 medium, 9–12 hard. Quant: 0–3 easy, 4–7 medium, 8–12 hard. The cutoffs differ by measure.

The practical lesson: **Section 1 matters more than its question count suggests.** A couple of extra correct answers there can move you up a whole pool and unlock a higher ceiling for the rest of the test.

Band ceilings: only the hard pool reaches 170

Each difficulty pool caps the maximum scaled score. This is the single most important thing to understand about section-adaptive scoring.

If you are aiming for **165+**, you must route into the **hard pool** on Section 2 — which means getting roughly **9+ of 12** right on Verbal Section 1, or **8+ of 12** on Quant Section 1. No amount of accuracy in an easier pool can get you there.

Worked example: the same total, two different scores

Quant has a 12-question Section 1 and a 15-question Section 2 (27 in all). Two test takers each answer 18 of 27 correctly, but split them differently.

  1. **Test taker A** gets **9 of 12** on Section 1 → routed to the **hard pool** (ceiling 170), then **9 of 15** on Section 2. The hard pool lets the scaled score climb into the 160s.
  2. **Test taker B** gets **5 of 12** on Section 1 → routed to the **medium pool** (ceiling 158), then **13 of 15** on Section 2. A strong Section 2, but the score is capped at 158.
  3. **Same 18 of 27 correct, different ceilings.** Front-loading accuracy into Section 1 is what separates the two outcomes.

Each measure scales 130–170. Your Section 1 raw-correct count routes Section 2 to an easy, medium, or hard pool, and that pool caps the scaled score. Within the pool, more correct answers raise the score. ETS does not publish its exact equating, so this is a modelled estimate accurate to about two points.
Because only the hard pool reaches 170. If your Section 1 performance routed you into the easy pool, your ceiling is 151; the medium pool caps at 158. You have to earn the hard pool on Section 1 to make 170 reachable.
