Why Verbal and Quant percentiles differ so much

The scales are not symmetric. A 160 sits at about the 84th percentile on Verbal but only the 50th on Quant, because the test-taking populations differ. That is why a balanced 320 means very different work depending on your background: STEM applicants grind Quant, humanities applicants grind Verbal.
